Use this when: Your camera shows black, or an app says it cannot find a camera.
Steps
|
Do this |
What should happen |
|
1. Check for a privacy shutter or sticker over the lens, and any camera-disable key on the keyboard. |
Many Dell laptops have a physical shutter or an Fn camera key. It happens more than you would think. |
|
2. Close every other app that uses the camera. |
Only one app holds the camera at a time. Teams or Zoom left running in the background is the usual culprit. |
|
3. Check Windows permissions: Settings > Privacy & security > Camera — make sure camera access and your app are allowed. |
A blocked permission shows as “no camera” inside the app. |
|
4. Open the Camera app. |
If you see yourself, the hardware is fine and the problem is the other app. If it is black here too, go to step 6. |
|
5. In your calling app, check its own camera setting — it keeps a separate picker from Windows. |
Teams, Zoom, and Meet each choose a camera independently. |
|
6. Restart the laptop. |
Clears a stuck camera process. |
If that did not work
Black in the Camera app too, after a restart. That is the ticket point — likely a driver or hardware fault.
The camera works but is upside down or frozen. Note it and log a ticket — usually a driver issue.
Your app is not listed under Camera permissions. Open it and start a call so it requests access, then allow it.
